The governor of the US state of New York signed a law legalizing the smoking of one of the most dangerous narcotic types at all, "marijuana", in public places for recreational purposes. The state joins 14 other US states that allow adults to smoke hashish.

A source in the New York Police Department described the lenient new drug law as "catastrophic for public safety," adding: "We always say that drugs are equivalent to weapons ... when you smell hashish, you can stop the car ... Some provisions of the new law took effect immediately, including those that allow people aged 21 and over to smoke and possess up to three ounces of narcotic in public places.
