US Secretary of State Blink announced tonight (Friday) that the Biden administration will lift the sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump on the prosecutor at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Pato Bensuda, and other officials in the court.

U.S. officials said Blinkan spoke earlier this evening with Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and briefed him on the decision.

Blinkan said Biden overturned the presidential decree Trump signed about a year ago that imposed economic sanctions and restrictions on obtaining a visa to the United States against a number of senior court officials, led by prosecutor Basuda.

"We have come to the conclusion that these measures were inappropriate and ineffective," Blinken said.

In the same breath, Blinken made it clear that the United States did not agree with the actions of the International Criminal Court in The Hague regarding the situation in Afghanistan and the Palestinian issue.

"We oppose the tribunal's attempts to exercise its jurisdiction against non - member states such as the United States and Israel," Blinken said.

"But we believe we can address our concerns on this issue better through dialogue with the tribunal rather than through sanctions."

The Biden administration has made the decision to lift the sanctions in light of a petition filed in federal court, for which it was necessary to respond by Monday.

U.S. officials have informed their colleagues in Israel in recent days that the administration will find it difficult to justify the sanctions before the court and will not be able to request a further postponement of the hearing.

Tonight, Linken updated Ashkenazi finally on the decision to remove the sanctions.

Senior Israeli officials said the Biden administration delayed the removal of the sanctions as much as possible at Israel's request but once the prosecutor in court decided to open an investigation into the Palestinian issue - there was no more value to the sanctions.

In late February, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked in his first phone call with President Biden not to lift sanctions on the prosecutor in The Hague tribunal.

As reported in Walla !, Netanyahu justified the request by saying that this would harm efforts to prevent the opening of an investigation into the Palestinian issue.

"The steps are not effective."

A year ago, the prosecutor in the court decided to proceed with the opening of an investigation into the war in Afghanistan.

Such an investigation could be directed against American soldiers and intelligence personnel.

The Trump administration condemned the decision and stressed that the United States is not a member of the tribunal and therefore the prosecutor has no authority to open an investigation against U.S. officials.

"Sanctions have no value."

Last June and then in September, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on the plaintiff and other elements in the court, and threatened to impose sanctions on the judges as well.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the time made it clear that the United States would take further action against the tribunal if an investigation was opened against American or Israeli officials.
