Dutch crossroads: in Créteil, motorists learn, cyclists approve

2021-04-03T06:04:33.478Z

One of the first very large roundabouts designed for cyclists is the very busy Pompadour crossroads, in Créteil (Val

The first major Dutch crossroads experiment has been carried out since June 2020 in Créteil, spurred by the department of Val-de-Marne and co-financed by the State and the region.

The Pompadour roundabout is XXL in size, sized to absorb eleven major transit axes and digest 40,000 vehicles per day.

What to dissuade all the sensible cyclists who qualified at the time the infrastructure of "bicycle chopper".

But deconfinement and the health crisis have decided otherwise.

Despite the two national roads and the A86 slip roads, the road ring has been rearranged to allow bicycles to pass safely by isolating and turning the track around the roundabout.

Yellow paint on the ground, markings and temporary dividers have been placed to materialize the device.

As with pedestrians, cyclists have priority in their movement, including in front of vehicles exiting the intersection.

So, does it work?

Do motorists learn and give way?

Cerema, a public expertise center, looked into the attitude of users and drew up a report in December at the request of Val-de-Marne.

No problem in 92% of interactions

Based on the video images, the observers analyzed 974 interactions between the different users.

Overall, the vast majority of behaviors, 92%, “do not pose any difficulties”.

Only five situations were deemed to be conflicting, such as the refusal of priority and emergency braking on both sides.

Of the 162 cyclists surveyed, 64% said they felt safe, compared to 9% previously.

And 35% of them did not use the Pompadour crossroads before its redevelopment.

According to Cerema, 24% of respondents specified "having changed their mode of travel" following work on this roundabout and 11% even changed their route to pass through it.

Users suggest making the bike path two-way and painting it to make it more visible to everyone.

Securing the roundabout represents 2.04 million euros, including 882,000 euros for Val-de-Marne, 750,000 euros for the region, the rest being supported by the State.

The objective of the department is in any case to perpetuate the development of this roundabout in the coming months.
