The couple, who are in their 20s, watched an exhibition by renowned American graffiti artist John Van, which took place at a gallery in the Lotte World Mall in the capital Seoul.

The work, which was about eight meters wide and three meters high, was not framed, and brushes and paints were placed in front of it.

At one point, the man picked up one of the brushes and added a number of black paint strokes to the artwork, with his partner filming it on her cell phone, thinking it was a public work to which anyone could add their own touch.

Only later did the two discover that this is a special work by the artist created in 2016, not framed due to its size, and that the brushes and paint containers were part of the full work, as part of a complete set alongside the graffiti work itself.

As soon as the curators of the exhibition noticed the paint smears added to the piece, they checked the security cameras and asked the police to arrest the two.

So, it turned out that the couple did not want to harm the work at all, but they just did not understand its concept.

Kang Wok, CEO of the company that organized the show, said that "we contacted the police as soon as we discovered the vandalism, but as those in charge of the venture we do not plan to harm the couple because of their mistake made in good faith, and we will try not to do much damage."

Ha-ji-gon, a South Korean cultural expert, told the American news network ABC that "nowadays galleries often display huge projects of graffiti painters, and it is not always clear to the public that this is an expensive work and that he should not take part in it. "Of this kind, and in my opinion we need to produce better preservation of the works so that it is clear that this is a complete art, and not something that the entire public paints."

Either way, from the moment the glitch was published, a larger audience asked to see the artist's graffiti work, which was not substantially damaged.

To avoid the chance that the work will be damaged again, it was decided to place a small fence and signs asking the audience not to touch it.
