It had been twenty years since the bombs had fallen in this part of the country.
Since March 27, the skies for the Karen have darkened after the Tatmadaw - the nickname given to the Burmese army - launched several air offensives in this isolated territory in south-eastern Burma.
In a few days, houses, schools or health centers in several villages were destroyed.
Fleeing the bombs, some 12,000 people left their homes.
Some have taken refuge in caves or under makeshift shelters in the middle of the jungle.
Others tried to cross the Salouen River which marks the border with Thailand.
These actions left at least 19 dead, including
"unarmed civilians, including children or students"
, said the Karen National Union (KNU), one of the country's main armed factions, which controls the hilly territory.
