London - Sana
British police today arrested dozens of people during widespread protests across the country to reject the government's plans to expand its police powers to crack down on demonstrators.
The Associated Press reported that thousands of people roamed the streets of several cities and towns, waving banners and chanting slogans denouncing the policies of the British government, especially those related to expanding police powers to suppress popular protests and the government's handling of the Corona virus crisis.
Violence occurred in some demonstrations after the police attempted to disperse them by force, as they arrested 107 people in the capital, London, under the pretext that they carried out acts violating the law.
News reports say the new draft law, "Police, Crime, Sentencing, and Courts" specifies measures that the police will be able to take to crack down on participants in demonstrations and which activists fear will be used to restrict dissent.
The police have mobilized heavily to restrict these protests, which were joined by members of the climate group "Extention Rebellion" and "Black Lives Matter".
Days of protests organized by the "Extension Rebellion" paralyzed parts of London in early 2019, which caused calls from some politicians to give the police more powers to prevent this from happening again.
