In agreement with Spain, Portugal has decided to extend "

controls at land and river borders

" until the end of April 15, the Portuguese government said, adding that rail transport also remained suspended.

This measure does not apply to the transport of goods, frontier workers and emergency services in particular.

This ban does not prevent the return to the country of Portuguese nationals and people with a residence permit, nor the exit of foreign citizens, underlines the ministry.

After two months of general confinement to deal with a violent third wave of the Covid-19 epidemic, Portugal began in mid-March a gradual and differentiated unlocking according to the sectors of activity which continues on Monday with the reopening of museums, colleges and café terraces.

After a record of nearly 16,500 new daily cases at the end of January, the health situation in this country of just over 10 million inhabitants has greatly improved.

According to the latest official report published on Sunday, Portugal recorded 4 deaths and 193 new confirmed cases of contamination in 24 hours.

The Portuguese authorities, however, remain cautious in this phase of deconfinement which lasts until May.

They have decided to maintain the restrictions for travelers to Portugal.

Flights with Brazil and the United Kingdom are currently suspended to limit the spread of new variants in particular.

Travelers traveling to Portugal by land, from countries where the Covid-19 incidence rate is equal to or greater than 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, such as France, Italy, Hungary, Poland or Sweden, will have to continue to be in solitary confinement for 14 days on their arrival, specifies the Ministry of the Interior.
