Journalist Yossi Hadar hosted a "15 Minutes" podcast today (Monday) with Prof. Shachar Lifshitz from Bar Ilan University.

"If the majority of the Jewish people in Israel do not keep the commandments, why are converts required to bear the burden of the commandments?"

Prof. Lifshitz wondered.

"Conversion procedures are a complete anomaly. On the one hand, Reform conversion is recognized for the purposes of the population registry only, and on the other hand, even Orthodox conversion for marriage and divorce purposes is not recognized, unless done by the Chief Rabbinate."

Prof. Lifshitz believes that the solution should address the current reality, but must still be done through halakhah - so if in the past joining the Jewish people involved observance, now the halakhic challenge is to find a way to join on a historical and cultural basis and service in the IDF.

What did the outlines formulated by Yaakov Ne'eman and Moshe Nissim offer, why should the Reformers and Conservatives also accept the authority of the Chief Rabbinate, what is sociological conversion and how does the conflict of conversion affect the unity of the Jewish people?
