A young pregnant Latina disappeared 40 years ago. His remains appeared on the bank of a river

Luis Sierra, 63, has been arrested as allegedly responsible for the murder of the 15-year-old Jersey City teenager, whose dismembered body was found in suitcases on the banks of a river in Pennsylvania in 1976, but only until now has it been known that it was she. A nephew he never met was the one who helped solve the mystery of his disappearance.

One day in 1976, Luis Colon went to bring soup to his sister Evelyn, who was 15 years old and several months pregnant.

Upon arrival, she only found "a baby carriage": of her and her boyfriend, Luis Sierra, there was no trace.

Neighbors of the Jersey City home, where the couple lived, told her they had left.

Both he and the rest of his family did not doubt that this was the case:

Sierra himself, who was then 19 years old, had sent a letter to the young woman's mother saying that she was fine

and that her baby had already been born, according to what reports the newspaper Nj.com, after talking with Colon.

About 44 years after "a desperate search," the young woman's family received devastating news: Pennsylvania police had identified remains found in 1976 as those of Evelyn, after years in which they had only been 'Beth Doe 'for researchers.

Drawings from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that were used to attempt to identify the 1976 homicide victim (whose remains were found on the bank of the Lehigh River in Carbon County, Pennsylvania) who turned out to be Evelyn Colon.missingkids. org

According to the autopsy, Evelyn Colon was "raped, strangled, shot and dismembered: the fetus she had in her womb was removed," as detailed in this article in The New York Times.

Luis Sierra - her boyfriend at the time, now 63 years old - was arrested and charged last Wednesday as her alleged murderer.

How was it possible to know that they were his remains?

Evelyn's body was found dismembered in three suitcases, in County County in December 1976, in Pennsylvania, near a river, according to state police.

But only until recently did it become known that this was her.

The remains had been exhumed in 2007 in an attempt to identify the victim using DNA analysis.

Last year researchers compared their genetic material (public and available) with a sample from Evelyn's nephew (Luis Colon's son) and found that they matched.

Louis Colon Jr. explained to NBC New York that he always would have liked to meet that cousin who was not even born when his aunt disappeared.

"I always felt a connection to her, so I decided to purposely upload my DNA to various websites," he

explained.

Although it never "occurred to anyone that they could have killed her," he added.

They also didn't think that this would be the way they would hear from her again.

"Beth Doe has a name: Evelyn Colon. Baby Jane Doe has a name: her name was Emily Grace Colon," Luis Colon's daughter Miriam Colon-Veltman wrote on the GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $ 15,000 to cover the cost of "memorial services, arrangements, travel, and whatever else the family needs to honor Evelyn and her baby," who was a girl.

There it is also explained that the remains at this time of the mother and daughter are not together, so they will use the money to relocate them and bury them together.

According to her father told NJ.com, many in the family thought that Evelyn just didn't want to have contact with them anymore and they thought she was safe since she was with her boyfriend.

Since then, several of them have moved to Puerto Rico.

The remains of Evelyn and her daughter rest in White Haven Cemetery in Pennsylvania.

Sierra, who is now 63 years old, was taken into custody.

Attempts by various means to contact him, him or a legal representative of his, have not been successful.
