(CNN) -

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in an episode of the Politico Dispatch podcast on Monday that he does not believe that the government is the main driver of health or vaccine passports, but that private entities could do something with that idea.

"I doubt that the federal government is the main driver of a vaccine passport concept," Fauci said.

"They may be involved in making sure things are done fairly and equitably, but I doubt the federal government is a major player in that."

  • Some countries want to establish a "covid passport" for people vaccinated against covid-19.

    These are their proposals

A "health passport", "immunity passport" or "covid passport" is a document issued by the authorities of a country where it is certified that the carrier has already been vaccinated, as in the case of Israel, using a green passport that allows access to stadiums, theaters or swimming pools, only to those who have been inoculated.

When asked by Politico's Jeremy Siegel if it wasn't the government, who was responsible, Fauci said he believes there could be individual entities doing it.

"There may be theaters that say you cannot enter unless you have proof of vaccination, there may be universities or other educational institutions that do that," he said.

"I'm not saying they should or will, but I'm saying I could envision how an independent entity might say, well, we can't interact with you unless we know you're vaccinated, but it's not going to work as mandated by the federal government."
