"

We are going to reopen our embassy and our consulate in Libya in the coming days,

" said Abela at a press conference alongside his Libyan counterpart Abdelhamid Dbeibah.

"

Air links will also be restored,

" he added.

No foreign airline currently serves Libya for security reasons.

The only air links (Tunis, Istanbul and Alexandria) are provided by Libyan companies, which still do not have access to European airspace.

"

We will work alongside the Prime Minister (Libyan) so that his country regains its strength,

" said the head of the Maltese government, promising to support the interim government in Libya "

in the area of security

" and "

helping him to regain his stability

”.

Mr. Dbeibah hoped that exchanges with Malta will strengthen after the return of his diplomatic mission and air links.

The island of Malta, Libya's closest European neighbor, is also one of its main partners.

Stuck in divisions after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has just acquired, at the end of a process under the aegis of the UN, a unified government responsible for leading the transition until national elections at the end of December.

European Council President Charles Michel was in Tripoli on Sunday to give EU support to the newly installed new government.
