Payment via smartphone is struggling to convince the French

Only one in ten French people surveyed said they used a smartphone payment method. But the adoption of payment by phone is struggling to take off.

According to the latest study conducted by Statista * last summer, only one in ten French people said they used a payment method on a smartphone.

An adoption rate far behind that of Poland (31%) and Sweden (29%), or Spain (21%) or the Netherlands (20%).

Only Switzerland is behind France with an adoption rate of 6%.

Several solutions are however offered to consumers.

BNP Paribas, Banque Postale and Société Générale have developed their own Paylib application to allow their customers to pay with their smartphone in stores.

Other French banks offer this service on already existing electronic wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

Apple Pay at the top of the list

According to Statista, Apple Pay leads the way in France.

41% of users of this type of service said they had used this application to pay at a point of sale during 2019. Google Pay is not far behind with 35% and Paylib defends itself by having convinced 28% of users.

The low adoption of this payment method is explained by the strong success of contactless payment in France.

A phenomenon amplified by the increase in the contactless payment ceiling to 50 euros since May 2020.

Since 2018, the number of merchants with a payment terminal eligible for contactless has increased from 59% to 80%.

Large and medium-sized distribution, bakeries, tobacco bars and post offices are the best equipped sectors.

In 2020, 47% of the 8 billion euros of bank card payments at merchants were made contactless against a third party in 2019. Payment via smartphone still has some way to go to reach this level of use ...
