Russian President Vladimir Putin today (Monday) approved a law that will allow him to remain in power until 2036 after a referendum on changes to the constitution last year.
One of the articles in the constitution that went to the polls on July 1 last year was a reset of Putin's priesthood restrictions so he could run in two more elections if he so wished.
The changes were approved as expected by the parliament, which is controlled by Kremlin trustees, and the law approved today gave them official validity.
Putin, 68, who has been in power for more than two decades - more than any other leader since Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin - said he had not yet decided whether to run in the 2024 presidential election, with the end of his current term.
In addition to this section, the amendments to the constitution gave priority to Russian law over international norms, banned same-sex marriage and mentioned “belief in God” as a central value.
About 78% of voters supported changes to the constitution in the referendum, which was spread over a week.
The turnout was 68%, but the opposition said the referendum was accompanied by pressure on voters and other irregularities, as well as a lack of transparency and independent oversight.
In the months since the vote, Russia has imprisoned Putin's most notable critic, Alexei Navalny, who went on a hunger strike last week in protest of his incarceration in a notorious penal colony.
