The trial of David Patterson, tried by the Assize Court of Seine-et-Marne, in Melun, for assassination and attempted assassination, enters its second week on Tuesday.

This 36-year-old inhabitant of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre appears for having thrown his BMW against the terrace of the pizzeria Cesena, in Sept-Sorts (Seine-et-Marne) on August 14, 2017. An attack that cost the life of a 13-year-old girl and seriously injured a dozen people.

His trial began on March 30, and is scheduled to last thirteen days.

The first few days were devoted to the personality of David Patterson, whose demeanor seemed to have changed a lot during the time of the drama.

He himself explained to the court that he had become "paranoid" and felt "the victim of a plot".

The accused had, in the past, been the victim of two violent assaults: he had notably been close to death in 2014 after having been stabbed in the throat with a cutter.

Not to mention that he had been shaken by the Bataclan attack of November 13, 2015: at that time, he was working as a security guard at the Olympia.

He thought he was being pursued

His personality is all the more at the heart of the debates since, on August 14, 2017, he attacks a restaurant that he and his relatives frequent.

He knows the boss, whom he finds "adorable".

That evening, the pizzeria is crowded: 45 people are present.

During the investigation, two colleges of expert psychiatrists looked into David Patterson.

According to them, the accused - delusionally convinced that he was "being pursued" - was suffering from a mental disorder at the time of the events.

“At the bar, last Friday, they confirmed their written conclusions.

My client suffers from a change in discernment ”, underlines his lawyer Me Emmanuel Giordana.

On the other hand, there is no question of abolishing discernment because its criminal act is not the result of "automatism".

David Patterson's mental pathology had not, that evening, completely taken precedence over reason.

The victims heard by the court from Thursday

Especially since, when he attacks the customers of the pizzeria, he cannot imagine attacking his imaginary "persecutors".

By throwing his car against the terrace, he seeks, on the other hand, "in a headlong rush, to escape the suffering, the anguish and the panic which rise in him", according to his lawyer.

On August 14, 2017, driving a BMW, David Patterson rushed into a pizzeria and killed a teenage girl.

Not to mention that at the time, David Patterson was trying to end his addiction to cannabis, which had lasted since his teenage years.

He had quit smoking ten days ago.

This withdrawal could have worsened his mental state.

Today the accused is being treated with an antipsychotic drug, Risperdal.
