A large-scale user data leakage incident occurred on Facebook, and the personal data of 2.94 million Facebook users in Hong Kong were uploaded to the Internet.

The incident has a wide-ranging impact, involving the personal data of 533 million users in 106 countries or regions around the world.

Privacy Commissioner Chung Lai-ling said in the TV and Radio program "Millennium" today (6th) that the Office of the Privacy Commissioner has launched a routine investigation on the incident, reminding platform users to be vigilant, to change passwords, set up two-factor authentication, and so on.

Fang Baoqiao, honorary chairman of the Hong Kong Information Technology Chamber of Commerce, said in the same program that there are not many things users can do at present, and they remind users not to go anywhere with a password.

Zhong Liling stated that it has launched a routine investigation on Facebook's leaked information and learned that the leaked information involved a single leak in 2019. The user's name, date of birth, phone number, name, email and other information were uploaded to the Internet.

She pointed out that the current direction of investigation involves understanding when the leak, the number of affected Hong Kong and the safety of the entire system, etc.

So far, no help or complaint has been received from Hong Kong people.

She said that if the information is used by criminals, it may be used for online lending, or for bottom-up purposes.

She said that she would ask Facebook to notify customers whose data has been leaked and deal with it as soon as possible.

She also said that platform users need to be vigilant and have the opportunity to receive phishing emails or strange calls, or hand over their own information on the website. She also pointed out that the number of scams has increased in the past six months.

She said that citizens can check on the platform or ask the Privacy Commissioner for help.

In addition, citizens can protect themselves by changing passwords and setting up two-factor authentication.

Fang Baoqiao: There is not much you can do, and you should not go to the world with a password

Fang Baoqiao, honorary chairman of the Hong Kong Information Technology Chamber of Commerce, said that although the incident occurred two years ago, if the user's email and phone number have not been transferred, the information is still new.

He also said that there are not many things that citizens can do, but they can change their passwords and add two-factor authentication. Don't go around the world with one password.
