United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on athletes and those concerned with sport to shoulder their responsibilities at all levels, build bridges of friendship and coexistence, promote healthy lifestyles and advance efforts to achieve the sustainable development goals.

The United Nations News Center quoted Guterres as saying in a message on the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace that those involved in sport have responsibilities that they must fulfill, including fulfilling international labor standards, combating discrimination and prejudice of all kinds, rejecting corruption and ensuring that the legacy left by major international events such as a cup World football, the Olympic Games and the Olympic Games for people with disabilities bring together the peoples of the world a positive legacy.

In light of the challenges facing the world of sports due to the Covid 19 pandemic, Guterres said that sport represents one of the great human activities as it is a model for teamwork, a platform for individual excellence and an engine for economic growth for the entire society.

In his message, the Secretary-General touched on the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on sports, and said that workers in this field, fans and athletes felt the pain of absence, lost revenues and delayed dreams.

With vaccines distributed and the hope they hold and spectators begin to return to the stadiums, Guterres said the world of sport can make critical contributions to a safe and sustainable recovery.

He said the United Nations looks forward to continuing to work with athletes and organizations around the world to advance climate action and promote peace, human rights and sustainable development.

"We will return to the stadiums as athletes and fans when everyone is safe from the pandemic," he said.
