Five stories, 100 minutes: Valleyer Tom Dauer curates the new Alpen Film Festival.

The project is very complex.

The films can be seen from May - if Corona allows it.

Valley

- Five films that will take you on a 100 minute road trip between Patagonia and Greece.

They take your breath away when Niklas Winter balances over the Monument Valley over a slackline stretched between two balloons or let you feel the cold when the arctic wind caresses the fur of the musk ox filmed by Rolf Steinmann.

If Corona allows, the Alpen Film Festival will go on tour from May - in cinemas, open-air locations and at selected stage locations.

The project focuses on mountains and alpinism, tells myths, fairy tales and stories.

The contributions are told and moderated by the protagonists of the films.

One of the driving forces is the Valley filmmaker and writer Tom Dauer.

He told us about the reasons for starting a festival, the selection of films and the enthusiasm of a 90-year-old.

Mr. Duration, the Bavarian Outdoor Film Festival BOFF has existed since 2017, where you are the artistic director.

You are now announcing a new format with the Alpen Film Festival.

Is this a continuation or a supplement?

And what is the difference between the two?

Tom Dauer:

In the future there will be both the Bavarian Outdoor Film Festival and our new format, for which Sandra Freudenberg as festival director and I as curator are responsible.

While the BOFF continues to focus on Bavarian content and protagonists, the perspective of the Alpen Film Festival is international.

Our aim is to present the Alps and the mountains of the world as a cultural area that connects people of different origins, be they mountain residents, mountain visitors or mountain people in general.

How did you choose the contributions?

Duration:

The decisive criteria are the originality of the content and the quality of the craftsmanship of the films.

Both must be fulfilled if a film is to be shown at the Alpen Film Festival.

For the 2021 season we have selected contributions that address the German-American relationship, present the specific threat to Arctic wildlife from climate change, celebrate friendship and target the sensationalism of the ski film industry.

And the nice thing about it is: This does not happen with a raised index finger, but through very subtle, exciting, cheerful, visually powerful and equally poetic film art.

Will it also be seen in the district?

Duration:

Of course, the Alpen Film Festival will also be shown in its home districts of Miesbach and Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, for example at Markus H. Rosenmüller's Berghofer Filmfest on the Stadlberg or in the venerable Tölz Capitol cinema.

If the situation allows, further appointments will certainly be added.

You made a film about Hermann Huber yourself.

What is it about and when was it created?

Duration:

My cinematic portrait of Hermann Huber was created over several days of shooting in autumn 2020 and spring 2021.

Fortunately, Hermann, at 90 years of age, was always on fire when it came to work.

What this man has experienced, from the Second World War to his beginnings near Salewa to his alpine adventures all over the world, is incredible.

I don't know anyone who has done so much for mountaineering.

And how confident, relaxed, courageous and curious you can stay well into old age - I find that more than impressive.

Hermann's attitude to life, his confidence, to express his basic trust in pictures, was my concern.

I hope I succeeded.
