Holocaust Martyrs 'and Heroes' Remembrance Day this year marks "the last Jewish witness - eighty years since the beginning of the mass extermination."

The state assembly will open tonight (Wednesday) at 20:00 in the Warsaw Ghetto Square at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, with the participation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.



Today, there are 174,500 Holocaust survivors living in Israel, with 83% of them over the age of 80 and 60% of the survivors being women, the Holocaust Survivors' Rights Authority has updated.

In the last year since Memorial Day last year, 14,264 survivors have died, and an average of 41 survivors have died every day.

About 31,000, who are 18% of the survivors and victims of antisemitic harassment, have passed the age of 90 and more than 900 survivors have crossed the age of 100. The average age of about 105,000 survivors is 84.8.



During the rally that will take place tonight, survivor Rosa Bloch, will speak on behalf of the survivors' representative and the torch of remembrance will be raised by Deputy Chairman of the Yad Vashem Board, Ronen Plot. Some of the singers are David Daur and Meshi Kleinstein and the ceremony will be moderated by presenter Hila Korach.

Tomorrow at 10:00 a two-minute siren will sound across the country.

A wreath-laying ceremony will then be held at the foot of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Memorial with the participation of the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Knesset, the President of the Supreme Court and representatives of survivors 'and fighters' organizations.

Afterwards, at 11:00, the "Everyone has a Name" ceremony will be held at the Chagall Lounge in the Knesset, during which Holocaust victims will be named and memorial candles will be lit by Knesset members and Holocaust survivors.

Towards 17:00, a closing ceremony of the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day events will be held at the Ghetto Fighters' Museum.

Where do Holocaust survivors live in Israel?

  • Haifa: 12,100 survivors

  • Jerusalem: 10,800 survivors

  • Tel Aviv: 9,500 survivors

  • Ashdod: 8,700 survivors

  • Netanya: 8,500 survivors

  • Be'er Sheva: 7,600 survivors

  • Petah Tikva: 7,000 survivors

  • Rishon Lezion: 6,900 survivors

Haifa is the city with the most Holocaust survivors with about 12,000, followed by Jerusalem with 11,000 and then Tel Aviv with 9,500.



By the end of 1948, 18,400 survivors had immigrated to Israel.

About 83,500 which is 48% rose by the end of the 1950s.

And between the years 2021-2019, 354 more Holocaust survivors immigrated to Israel.



According to the Holocaust Survivors' Rights Authority, about 64% of the recognized survivors are natives of Europe, of whom the largest group is about 36% who are 63,500 survivors, natives of the former Soviet Union.

About 12% who are 20,500 survivors, born in Romania, about 5.5% who are 9,600 survivors, born in Poland, about 2.7% who are 4,800 survivors, born in Bulgaria, about 1.5% who are 2,500 survivors, born in Hungary, and 2,500 of the survivors born in Germany .



The PA report also shows that 36% of the survivors are natives of Asia and North Africa.

32,000 of the Moroccan and Algerian natives who suffered from antisemitic harassment and various restrictions.

About 11% of the 19,200 survivors are Baghdad Jews who were exposed to the Farhud riots in Iraq in mid-1941.
