A collision leaves 16 dead and 14 injured on a highway near a mine in Sonora

Both the deceased and the injured worked in the same gold mine in Caborca. There are 13 hospitalized in stable condition and one in critical condition, after the vehicles collided head-on. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the accident.


A traffic accident this Tuesday morning in Caborca, in the Mexican state of Sonora, left at least 16 people dead and another 14 injured, after a bus and a van carrying mine personnel collided head-on.

None of the 16 passengers in the smaller vehicle survived

, while the 14 people transported by the bus were injured and transported to local hospitals, the Sonora Attorney General's Office reported in a statement.

The crash occurred about a two-hour drive from Lukeville, the closest port of entry on the Arizona border.

Both the wounded and the fatalities were employed at the Noche Buena mine, from which gold is extracted.

The company that operates the concession, Penmont, extended its condolences and reported that it will support the victims and their families.

"Unfortunately, in the accident, 16 people who were traveling in the TEPSA company vehicle died," the mining company told the Puente Project.
