The president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, promulgated this Tuesday the reform that postpones the municipal elections, of regional governors and constituents, from April 10 and 11 to May 15 and 16.

The reason for postponing the elections is the high number of coronavirus infections that Chile has registered in recent weeks.

Which maintains more than 96% occupancy of critical beds to the hospital system.

"Given the hard reappearance and the appearance of new variants throughout the world, and taking the unanimous opinion of the medical community and the majority of citizens, it did not seem prudent or convenient to hold elections this coming weekend," said Piñera from the La Moneda Palace.

The president affirmed that the objective is to protect the health of all and also "the health of democracy."

In that sense, he warned that if the elections were held now, it would result in a high abstention in the process.

According to the most recent report from the Ministry of Health, Chile registered 5,146 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.

This adds up to a total of 1,037,780 infections and 23,734 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
