Consular elections: 1.2 million French people living abroad called to vote by internet

Internet voting in consular elections is anticipated (for five days from May 21 to 26) to prevent double voting.


If the debate on internet voting is stuck in France, this way of voting is already a reality for French people living outside our borders.

They are 1.2 million - registered on the registers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - to be called upon to speak next month from their smartphone, tablet or computer in the context of consular elections.

The ballot - which should allow the election of 447 advisers for French people living abroad - was postponed for a year because of the health crisis.

Already tested in 2014, internet voting should experience a boost this year, in accordance with the wishes of the Scientific Council.

“We hope to increase participation in consular elections, which are traditionally low,”

explains Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Secretary of State for Tourism, French people living abroad and La Francophonie.

And this while the Covid-19 epidemic will cause the closure of around 20% of polling stations
