Munich Airport was hit hard financially by the corona pandemic.
It was probably a loss of 320 million euros in 2020.
Munich - The slump in air traffic during the Corona crisis has pushed Munich Airport deep into the red.
According to preliminary calculations, he made a loss of around 320 million euros in 2020, as Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) announced on Wednesday.
In the previous year, the airport had posted a record profit of 178 million euros.
The decisive factor was the corona pandemic.
It had dropped the passenger volume from the last 48 to eleven million travelers and also hit air freight and air mail.
The number of take-offs and landings fell by more than 270,000 to around 147,000 last year.
According to FMG, the lowest traffic result since the airport opened in 1992 caused sales to collapse - from 1.6 billion to 580 million.
Munich Airport: Massive savings measures during the Corona crisis - majority of 10,000 employees on short-time work
The airport company reacted with massive cost-cutting measures.
Among other things, last year it sent a large part of the 10,000 employees on short-time work and shut down one of the two terminals completely and part of the second.
However, the savings of 530 million euros last year could not prevent the total loss.
The airport is assuming that air traffic will only recover slowly and has therefore started a renovation program.
The job cuts were announced last year.
In the meantime, there has been a slight increase in flight activity.
Since the beginning of the Easter holidays, more destinations have been flown to from Munich - including Mallorca.
