- The transport helicopter regiment 30 from Niederstetten (Baden-Wuerttemberg) is again carrying out a mountain flight training in the German Alpine region this year.

Since Tuesday (April 6th) the training flights have started from two locations in the eastern part of the Alpine region.

The flights take place between the Tegernsee in the east and the Oberstaufen area in the west.

During the training, which lasts three weeks, up to three NH 90 transport helicopters operate from the Lechfeld military airfield and a maximum of two H 145 LUH SAR search and rescue helicopters from the Kaufbeuren airfield.

"Mountain flights and especially mountain landings with a helicopter are very important to us army pilots," explains the commander of the 30th Transport Helicopter Regiment, Colonel Peter Göhringer.

"It is important to observe the difficult terrain, the laws of flight physics and the special meteorological conditions."

The helicopters will travel individually.

Mountain fighters or other maneuver troops are not involved in mountain flight training.

On some flights, external load weights are deposited on mountain landing sites and flown back down to the valley.

The crews of the NH90 helicopters, which have been in use in Afghanistan since the beginning of the year, are currently experiencing the importance of mountain flight experience.

There are significantly higher mountains in the Hindu Kush and Marmal Mountains area than in the German Alpine region.
