No one in Amman knows for sure the whereabouts of 41-year-old Prince Hamzah, although he appears to remain under house arrest without being able to communicate with his supporters since Tuesday.

Son of King Hussein and his fourth wife, Queen Noor, he acted as heir to the throne upon the death of his father in 1999, while his 59-year-old half-brother Abdullah succeeded him as head of state under a pact of family.

Five years later, the Hashemite monarch ignored the agreement and appointed his eldest son, Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, 26, as the new heir to the throne.

"Hamzah is under my tutelage, in his palace together with his family," continued the televised message from the King of Jordan.

"He has pledged before the Hashemite dynasty to remain loyal and subject their interests to the Constitution and laws of Jordan," he emphasized.

The monarch's words have followed the statement issued by the royal house on Monday in which it was assured that the former heir had sworn loyalty to him, after being accused on Sunday by the Government of being part of a conspiracy with foreign forces against the stability of the country.

The Jordanian attorney general, Hassan al Abdalat, specified that the secrecy imposed on the investigation into the attempt only affects "matters related to the investigation (...) without limiting freedom of expression, in accordance with the law."

In principle, it was reported that the official investigations into Prince Hamzah and the rest of the 16 or 18 detainees in the coup plot, according to the sources, were under summary secrecy and the media and social networks had been banned. report on it.

King Abdullah specified in his message that "the investigation (in which his stepbrother has been involved) will continue its course and its results will be made public."

Tension erupted in peaceful and stable Jordan on Saturday with a raid in Amman in which Sharif Hasan bin Zaid, a royal, and Bassem Awadallah, former head of the royal house, former adviser to the monarch and former finance minister, were arrested. as well as about two dozen unidentified suspects, including Bedouin tribal chiefs and members of the security forces.

Prince Hamzah drew international attention by posting a video in which he claimed to be under house arrest due to his proximity to currents critical of the Jordanian government.

In the recording, broadcast by the BBC, the former crown prince lashed out at "the incompetence and corruption that have prevailed in the country for the past 15 years."

According to information aired by international news agencies, one of Jordan's largest internet providers interrupted its service on Wednesday for several hours, while overflights of military planes and helicopters took place in Amman.

US President Joe Biden telephoned King Abdullah to express "full support" for his leading role in the region.
