The Hispanic Caucus of the United States Congress, which groups 37 federal legislators of Hispanic descent, condemned on Monday what it called "the recent attacks" against one of its members, Democratic congresswoman Norma Torres, for a series Tweets published last week by the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

"Unfortunately, the recent series of personal attacks against Congresswoman Torres only serves to undermine her efforts and those of our Caucus to build a relationship between the United States and El Salvador that benefits the people of both countries," the Caucus said in a statement. .

The group also considered “totally inappropriate for a foreign leader to interfere in the elections to the United States Congress”, after the Salvadoran president asked in those publications “not to vote” for Torres.

Bukele has not reacted publicly to the Caucus' indications and the Communications Secretariat of the Presidency of El Salvador had not responded to a request for comment sent Wednesday by CNN.

The statement comes after Bukele asked Latin Americans in California's 35th district to "not vote" for Torres on Thursday.

"It does not work for you, but to keep our countries underdeveloped," Bukele wrote in a tweet, after a controversial exchange of messages with Torres on the same social network.

Last week, the congresswoman blamed the governments of the so-called northern triangle of Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador) for the migration drama on the southern border of the United States.

Torres used as an example the video of the US Border Patrol that captured the moment in which human smugglers throw two young girls over the metal wall that separates the United States from Mexico.

President Bukele questioned Torres for the inaccuracy in the information, since the two minors are from Ecuador.

The Foreign Ministry of that country has assured in a statement that it provides assistance to minors.

The congresswoman from the Democratic Party has been critical of the management of the presidents of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Recently, Torres also said during an interview with CNN that he has asked the government of President Joe Biden not to give a penny to the governments of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador because he considers that their presidents are not doing their job and do not respect the State. of law.

Bukele, for his part, has already asked the US to treat Guatemala and Honduras differently because he believes that his government is making efforts to reduce illegal immigration.
