Every year more cars, more traffic jams, more noise - many have this feeling.

But is that also true?

Thomas von Sarnowski, district councilor of the Greens, got the figures from the vehicle registration authority - and in his opinion they are tough.

District

- In fact, the number of cars in the district increased from 84,923 to 86,632 in the course of 2020.

Just a small increase?

"You have to visualize it," say the Greens, and do the math: "If you lined up the 1709 additional cars from 2020 alone, bumper to bumper, you would get around 7.5 kilometers of cars."

One should be aware that the increase in cars in the district “is not just standing around in the private garage”, but that this 7.5 kilometer line of cars in addition to the old car population is on our streets, is in public space, parking spaces are scarce and push your way through the town streets.

According to von Sarnowski, it is by no means the case that many district citizens suddenly bought a second or third car, the increase can be explained by the increase in population.

Green district councilor Sarnowski wants new awareness of the problem

According to the Greens, it is about creating a new awareness of the problem - and about solutions: “We have to recognize that the Ebersberg district is one of the fastest growing regions in Germany.

And every new citizen in the district also brings with them a need for mobility - and often their own car.

But our town centers are characterized by rural to small towns and the passages have grown historically, even if you wanted to: you can't accommodate any further lanes.

That is why we now need a rethink, a real traffic turnaround. "

Mobility mix required

For the Green District Council, it is clear: “The car will continue to play a major role in our rural district in the future - and it will also be increasingly electric.

But the drive turn does not eliminate the space problem.

There is no one solution, the mobility of the future is a colorful mix: sharing stations with cars, bikes and cargo bikes to rent, attractive bus and suburban train connections, as well as a comprehensive network of safe and everyday cycle paths. "

A higher population density also has advantages in terms of local transport.

When it comes to car sharing, the district is right at the forefront nationwide.

It is now particularly important that the right course is set right at the beginning of new residential projects and that plans are largely car-free, as is the case with the Hölzerbräu district in Ebersberg.

Close to the center with many walking destinations and good connections to the S-Bahn, you can easily do without your own car in everyday life and use a car sharing car for occasional furniture purchases or excursions.

In the opinion of the Green District Council, every S-Bahn community needs such future residential quarters, because more and more people want a car-free life.

There is still great potential in bicycles, says Sarnowski, who is applying for the Bavarian state chairmanship of the Greens: “Whether shopping, taking children to sport or commuting, the persistently strong e-bike and cargo bike boom opens up completely new possibilities to transport larger loads comfortably and to cover longer distances

We should now unleash this potential, for example by publicly promoting the purchase of cargo bikes. "
