After the election in Bulgaria: Borissov renounces parliamentary mandate

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boiko Borissow has renounced his future mandate as a member of parliament four days after the parliamentary elections.

Borissov said he did not need the protection from criminal prosecution that he would have as a parliamentarian in the future.

He had submitted a corresponding application to the Central Election Commission.

In Bulgaria, the prime minister does not have to be a member of parliament.

In the parliamentary elections, Borisov's pro-European bourgeois party GERB was the strongest party with 26 percent.

Borisov was elected as the list leader in two electoral districts - in the capital Sofia and in Plovdiv.

A total of six parties, some of which are at odds, are entering the newly elected parliament.

There are no clear majorities so far.

Borissov is unlikely to be able to forge a new government coalition.

Four parties do not want to form a coalition with the GERB.
