China: so-called asylum for wanted criminals

Earlier on April 8, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a warning on the news that Britain had provided asylum for Luo Guancong. The spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zhao Lijian said at a press conference that Luo Guancong was a criminal suspect wanted by the Hong Kong police.

"We firmly oppose any country, organization, and individual to shield criminals and criminals in any way."

Zhao Lijian also stated that if the British side openly stands for "Hong Kong independence" elements and provides so-called asylum to wanted criminals, this is a gross interference in Hong Kong's justice, contrary to international law and basic norms of international relations, and also against the rule of law principles that the British side has always advertised.

The British side should immediately correct its mistakes and stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs.

Luo Guancong posted a post on Facebook on April 7 announcing that he had been granted political asylum in the UK.

He said, "After about 4 months of application, several rounds of meetings and talks with the refugee approval authority, I have received a notice from the UK Home Office earlier that my asylum application has been approved."
