Dr. Huerta: Variants of covid-19 put vaccines at risk 3:59
(CNN Spanish) -
The Government of the Dominican Republic is investigating why at least three people received vaccines against covid-19 from different pharmaceutical companies between the first and second doses, Health Minister Daniel Rivera reported on Wednesday.
Rivera said that the applications of the different drugs, the first dose of the Covishield vaccine and the second dose of Sinovac, were due to a confusion, although he did not specify who.
According to the official, the people who received the vaccines have not had any side effects.
These cases are unpublished and there are still no studies that indicate what can happen when doses of different vaccines are received, said Dr. Elmer Huerta, a specialist in oncology and Public Health.
"The immune system is going to react to protein S in both vaccines, people are going to be protected, and side effects are unlikely," added Dr. Huerta, who is a contributor to CNN.
At the moment, in the Dominican Republic, the Covishield vaccines - manufactured in India on the AstraZeneca technology platform - and Sinovac are being applied.
