Kochel am See

- In mid-April, the Water Management Office (WWA) in Weilheim begins work on structures in the Laingraben in the municipality of Kochel am See.

The WWA announced that damaged structures in the lower reaches of the Laingraben will be repaired or partially renewed in order to preserve protection against flooding.

The work is carried out in-house by the river master's office in Benediktbeuern.

A look at the WWA archive documents that there have been 16 flood events on the Laingraben since 1727.

There have been multiple floods on the southern outskirts of Kochel.

"According to old drafts and construction diaries, the Laingraben was technically expanded in the lower reaches of the river at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century," said the WWA in a press release.

"The stone barriers in need of renovation are likely to date from this time and would therefore be over 100 years old."

According to the WWA, the buildings in the lower reaches showed minor to considerable damage due to their age.

From a water management point of view, preservation is "of the utmost importance and urgency" in order to be able to continue to guarantee flood protection for the development in Kochel.

A total of ten buildings are being renovated or completely renewed.

These are barriers, base ramps and bank protection structures.

"The barriers are no longer stable," says Johann Huber, head of the river master's office in Benediktbeuern.

Sometimes stones fell out, in other places the so-called stilling basins are hollow and no longer safe.

"If they break away, there is no longer any stability, which would have dire consequences in the event of a flood," says Huber.

Because when it rains heavily, the stream in the Laingraben swells quickly.

The water management office estimates the costs at 800,000 euros.

Employees of the river master's office in Benediktbeuern will be busy until 2023.

The work depends on the weather and will be carried out from mid-April to around the end of November, reports Huber.

The construction work is taking place in close consultation with the municipality of Kochel, because at times it is necessary to close the small bridge over the Laingraben above the "Alte Straße".

The closure will be announced in good time and the diversion will be signposted.
