According to SPIEGEL information, some entrepreneurs and CDU politicians want to promote climate policy among the Christian Democrats. The project should also be preparation for a possible black-green coalition in the federal government.

A new group has formed in the CDU that wants to advance the climate issue within the party: the association of the »KlimaUnion«.

In the past week, according to information from SPIEGEL, corresponding tasks were carried out at the notary, and a founding meeting took place at the end of March.

The initiators include the CDU federal board member Wiebke Winter, the ex-Tesla manager Philipp Schröder and the bicycle activist and entrepreneur Heinrich Strossenreuther.

»The aim must be for us to achieve the 1.5 degree target and become climate neutral in the next ten to twenty years.

That is what we want to campaign for in the Union, "Strosenreuther told SPIEGEL.

One of the tasks of the »Climate Union« should include providing support in election campaigns and giving the CDU street election campaigners arguments for a »good and correct climate policy«.

"Climate change will be a bigger challenge for Germany than reunification"

The »1.5-degree effective climate policy« must become an integral part of the CDU.

On the one hand, it is about the Christian motivation of creation, about generational justice.

But it is also about industrial policy considerations.

"Tomorrow's world market will be climate-neutral and the German economy will have a competitive advantage if our industry prepares for it as quickly as possible," said Strossenreuther.

"We want to sharpen the climate policy profile of the CDU and anchor the KlimaUnion firmly in the party," said Wiebke Winter.

Philipp Schröder, who once belonged to the Greens, warned: “Climate change will be a bigger challenge for Germany than reunification.

We need the bourgeois camp for this policy change and we have to expand our bubble. "

The aim should also be to support coalition negotiations on climate policy and to sound out possible coalition options for the federal government, such as a black-green government.

"We also want to be a bridge between the green bubble and the economically conservative camp."

“KlimaUnion” wants to be part of the base

The CDU should not ignore the issue out of fear that it might only help the Greens.

"Our goal is for CDU election campaigners to wear a Climate Union button and to stand up for the 1.5 degree target, but with their own vocabulary and their own arguments," said Schröder.

The group emphasizes: See yourself as a "grassroots movement".

It is true that a line to elected officials is also important, but one does not want to allow oneself to be captured and to position oneself as broadly as possible on the grassroots.

Talks were held in advance with, among others, CDU Vice Norbert Röttgen, Hamburg's CDU boss Christoph Ploß and Member of the Bundestag Thomas Heilmann.

"I support the KlimaUnion because it combines the urgently needed measures for climate protection with the economic opportunities that our German location offers in a special way," said the former Siemens boss Heinrich von Pierer, who is a member of the CSU.

The »KlimaUnion« wants to become a recognized branch of the Union parties, like the FrauenUnion or Junge Union.

To this end, however, one also wants to implement a new climate policy at the federal party congress.
