Corona: That's why Brazil is the most dangerous country in the world right now

2021-04-09T18:40:31.923Z

The number of infections is exploding, resistant virus mutations are spreading - and a rule of fear is growing: President Bolsonaro is steering Brazil into the abyss. Why?

More than 4,000 corona deaths in one day, more than 340,000 deaths from the pandemic so far - and a new mutant of the corona virus that can also infect people who have already survived Covid 19 disease: Brazil is president through politics Jair Bolsonaro has become the most dangerous hotspot in the pandemic.

And to the danger for the whole world.

According to the World Health Organization WHO, the virus mutation P.1 has already been detected in more than 40 other countries, even in distant Canada.

The President hardly cares.

He is apparently far too busy consolidating his power through a system of fear, slander, and nepotism.

In the podcast, host Olaf Heuser talks to SPIEGEL's two Latin America correspondents, Jens Glüsing and Marian Blasberg, about the damage Bolsonaro has caused in Brazil, about the president's digital militias - and about his dream of a coup to become his own Soaring military rulers.

"Brazil doesn't actually have a government, that's the problem."

Jens Glüsing

"Bolsonaro is dangerous for Brazil because it weakens democratic institutions and the rule of law," says Marian Blasberg.

“And he's dangerous because his policies have made Brazil a breeding ground for virus mutants.

The world should show him limits in its own interest. "

In the meantime, the country's economic elite is also calling for a rethink in corona policy and national coordination of protective measures.

So far, however, it has been an open call to the government.

“Brazil doesn't actually have a government, that's the problem,” says Jens Glüsing.

"It's an accumulation of incompetence: These are people who have their heads full of ideologies, but they have no technical knowledge of their departments."
