The state supports families with children to buy their own home with the child benefit.

In order to receive the child benefit, the applicants originally had to have signed the purchase contract or received the building permit by December 31, 2020.

Due to the corona pandemic, this period has been extended by three months to March 31, 2021.

Even after the Baukindergeld extension, the application for the Baukindergeld must be submitted no later than six months after moving in.

The official registration confirmation at the local residents' registration office is considered the move-in date.

The application can be submitted by December 31, 2023 at the latest.

Per child under 18 years of age who are entitled to child benefit, there is 1200 euros per year for a period of ten years.

A family with one child therefore receives a total of 12,000 euros in child benefit.

Eligible families in every federal state receive the Baukindergeld.

The Free State of Bavaria pays the Baukindergeld plus an additional 300 euros per child over ten years.

However, the Bavarian Baukindergeld plus was not extended, which is why it is no longer possible to apply for this additional subsidy via BayernLabo after the deadline.

Baukindergeld income limit is generous

Families with at least one child within certain income limits are entitled to Baukindergeld.

Only children under the age of 18 who move into the property with their parents and have their main residence there are taken into account.

For one child, the taxable household income may not exceed 75,000 euros per year.

An allowance of 15,000 euros per child is also taken into account.

Families with one child receive up to a taxable income of 90,000 euros per year building child benefit of 1,200 euros, with two children the income limit corresponds to a taxable income of 105,000 euros a building child benefit of 2,400 euros per year.

Since the tax office deducts business expenses such as trips to work and special expenses such as contributions to old-age provision when determining the taxable income from gross income, the gross income of a family with one child can be over 90,000 euros per year.

To calculate the household income, the average income of the year before and before the last year before the application is used.

If the application for Baukindergeld is submitted this year, the income tax assessments for 2019 and 2018 serve as the basis for calculating the average income.

Which building child benefit requirements still apply

The Baukindergeld only supports the purchase of the first owner-occupied property.

If there is already an owner-occupied, rented, usufruct, let free or vacant residential property for long-term use in Germany, there is no subsidy.

The Baukindergeld is also not paid for a renovation or conversion.

The number of children at the time of the application is decisive for the Baukindergeld.

According to the federal government, not only families but also single parents are eligible.

If the child moves out later and no longer belongs to the household, KfW will still pay the child benefit for a full ten years.

The same applies if the child benefit ceases to exist after the parents have submitted the application for construction child benefit.

Pregnant women should know that there is no funding for children who are born after the application.

An exception applies to homeowners who moved in before September 18, 2018.

In this case, KfW takes into account all children who were under 18 on the day of moving in or who were born within three months of moving in.

Submit documents in good time via the login

The state-owned KfW banking group is responsible for submitting applications and paying out the child benefit.

The application must be submitted online at the KfW grant portal no later than six months after moving into the owner-occupied home.

The applicants receive a confirmation in the KfW grant portal.

Afterwards they have to prove their identity via video identification or with the Postident procedure of the Deutsche Post.

Applicants must submit income tax assessments, confirmation of registration, excerpt from the land register and the notarized purchase contract

as

documents within three months of the confirmation of the application via their Baukindergeld login.

The building permit is required when building the property.
