End of “free and chosen” life: pressure is mounting on the government side

2021-04-09T18:16:43.989Z

With more than 3,000 amendments, the examination of the bill on the end of life was cut short without even a vote, due to lack of time. But

Will the executive be able to hold its line for a long time, concerning the end of life?

With the heavy context of the Covid-19 epidemic in the background, the government has so far shown little inclination to legislate by the end of the five-year term.

"The debate deserves to take place, there is no doubt", but it "needs time", repeated Olivier Véran, during the examination (which was cut short) of the law proposal of the deputy Liberties and Territories, Olivier Falorni, opening a right to “a free and chosen end of life”.

In Le Parisien, Wednesday April 7, the Minister of Health proposed to meet "in 2022".

Except that the pressure has gone up a notch at the Palais Bourbon, after the session this Thursday evening.

The discussions were heated, against a background of marked disagreements.

And with more than 3,000 amendments mostly intended to counter it, the text could not, as expected, be voted on on time.

But strong of the vote in extremis of its article 1, its supporters are decided not to stop there.

Including a large part of LREM deputies, whose group is divided.

According to several sources, the loop bringing together some 140 Marchers MPs, supporters of the text, was thus "unanimous" on this point.

The PS and Liberties and Territories groups, as well as most of the Agir deputies, also plead in this direction.

The MoDem group, on the other hand, displays its reservations - "Patrick Mignola judges that it is not for us to decide for the moment, he prefers that everyone regains spirits", confides his entourage.

“Taking into account the harmony and the scale of the votes which were able to take place, all eyes are now on the majority and the executive, thus advances the LREM vice-president of the Assembly, Hugues Renson.

Is there or is there not the will and the courage to legislate on this subject within twelve months?

It must !

We cannot postpone everything to the presidential campaign.

"The LREM deputy, Jean-Louis Touraine abounds:" We are going to seize the executive, and first and foremost the president, to reflect on the advisability of resuming the rest of the work.

"

"A refusal would be incomprehensible"

After a message passed on Tuesday April 6 through Christophe Castaner, discussions are underway for this request to take a more formal turn.

"The ball is in the court of the Elysée and we are going to send an official letter to the president to ask how the examination of this law continues, in the mandate," says Touraine, who insists: "From LFI to LR , a transpartisan communion created solidarity for this same cause.

"

“We believe that society is asking us, that the debate is ripe.

Yesterday (

Editor's note: this Thursday

), the session ended for lack of time.

It would be an immense disappointment and a very great incomprehension on the part of the deputies to stop there ”, insists the president LREM of the Commission of the laws, Yaël Braun-Pivet.

In an internal message, another LREM deputy warns: “A refusal would be incomprehensible.

What about their leader, Christophe Castaner?

This Thursday morning on France 2, he only estimated that "if the government wanted to include it" on the parliamentary agenda, he would "obviously" be at his side "to carry this debate".

Not sure that the executive can still take refuge behind "a wisdom opinion".

"He can no longer be ostrich", slices a Walker.
