In a clearly exceptional context due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the controls that were activated from the quarantine restrictions, the crime rate in the City of Buenos Aires fell by almost half during 2020 if the data released a year earlier.
In general terms, the thefts reported in 2020 (34,460)
fell 45%
compared to 2019 (62,829).
There were also notable casualties in motor vehicle theft, robberies with the use of motorcycles and theft (an index that in 2019 had increased compared to 2018).

, when the highest number was recorded.

In the last two years, the City Police
clarified two-thirds of the homicides
immediately.
"During 2020, as of the end of March and as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the circulation of people was strongly reduced and this impacted on the drop in crime. However, in the first months before the pandemic, all crimes continued
the downward trend that was evidenced in 2019
, which had been the best year in terms of security indexes, "commented this Friday the Buenos Aires Deputy Chief in charge of the Ministry of Justice and Security, Diego Santilli, who presented the Crime Map 2020 together with the Secretary of the Ministry, Marcelo D'Alessandro, and Aníbal Falivene, Undersecretary of Community Security and Criminal Investigation.
In any case, they clarified that at the end of 2020, when mobility reached almost normal levels in the City, crime in general remained below that increase in the movement of people.
"This was achieved thanks to a policy implemented since 2017 with the creation of the Comprehensive Public Security System and a working method that modernized and unified the approach to the fight against crime.
Crimes in the City are at the best levels of the last 26 years "
, remarked Santilli.
The
homicide
rate
per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020 was 4.03%,
which represents the second lowest homicide rate in the last 26 years (1995).
The previous best rate was in 2019, with 3.32%.
The rise in homicides occurred mainly in the popular neighborhoods 1.11.14 / Rivadavia and 21.24 / Zavaleta (12 more than in 2019) and due to causes such as quarrel, revenge or settling accounts.
The drug war in some of these areas has intensified in recent months and even at the beginning of this 2021 it was again represented in a series of crimes.
