Weighed down by his failed start and his heavy 78 (+6), Thursday, Victor Perez will not be there this weekend among the survivors of the cut.
On alternating current, the Tarbais, on a course, it is true, much more accessible than the day before, nevertheless raised its head with a card of 73 (+1) more in line with its expectations.
Author of five birdies, but also of two doubles and two bogeys, the 29th World had three birdies from 14 to 16. Not enough to pass on the right side of the cut, however.
This beautiful reaction of pride arriving a little too late.
His total of +7 after two laps does not allow him to dream of crossing the cut set for the hour at +3.
A long way of the cross on Thursday
Victor Perez had played four rounds last November during his first participation.
46th (+1 overall), he was very solid in his big game, finding 82% of the fairways, but was on the other hand less comfortable putter in hand, conceding in particular four times three putts on the course.
Six months later, he had returned to Georgia with confidence and some certainty, notably thanks to his fourth place in the WGC Match-Play and his 9th place in the Players.
It remained to tame the diabolical greens of Augusta.
And for his first "real Masters" in normal configuration, the French number one had a very complicated first round on Thursday.
Author of a 78 (+6), the Tarbais like many of his colleagues lived a long way of the cross on a route more complex than ever.
In difficulty in chipping, a little less comfortable than usual in his faceoffs (10 fairways out of 14 touchdowns), he had stuck in putting (1.83 putts on average).
On alternating current Friday
This Friday, it was on the first hole of Amen Corner, on the 11th, that his hopes of passing the cut were probably gone.
The eleventh Frenchman in history to compete in the Masters found the water obstacle to the left of the green and then had to save the bogey.
It was then pointing at +8, far, very far from the cut set for the hour at +3.
His day had started with two birdies at 2 (par 5) and 3 (par 4) but then he suffered an air gap with a double bogey on the dreaded 5 (par 4) and a three putts that hurt.
A failed approach on the 6 (par 3), sanctioned by a bogey, plunged him a little more into doubt.
Just like his failure on the 11 (par 4).
Back to the wall, the birdie machine started up again from 14. A putt from outside the green in the box on this par 4, a green touched in two on the 15 (par 5) and a stroke iron at the mast on the 16 (par 3) to go down to +5 total.
The good series ended there with a par saved on the 17 (par 4).
And the 18th (par 4) was particularly badly negotiated.
A chip scratched on his third stroke and a ball coming down the green, followed by a nasty three putts and a double bogey.
A sad final note.
See you next year.
