Nicaragua: old station will be digital medium and 3 critical programs come out

Radio Universidad, one of the first FM stations in Nicaragua and which belongs to the Central American University (UCA), will become a digital medium.

This was reported this Thursday by academic authorities of the Jesuit university.

The decision caused three programs critical of Daniel Ortega's government to go off the air.

The UCA leadership told CNN that it is investing in the modernization and upgrade of all the radio equipment and facilities.

The change in the transmission system of Radio Universidad led to the disappearance of the programs "Café con voz," "Onda local," and "Cuerpos sinvergüenzas," according to the directors of the three independent radio spaces who questioned the actions of the government since the socio-political crisis that began in April 2018.

"More and more independent media are threatened to close down due to economic asphyxia, legal pressure, with mercenary and repressive laws, as well as harassment, threats, harassment and censorship," said PCIN.

CNN consulted the government's Council for Communication and Citizenship about these complaints, coordinated by Vice President Rosario Murillo, but so far we have not received a response.
