What do our MPs earn on the side?

2021-04-09T18:07:48.893Z

Do MPs earn anything on top of their diets? And if so, how much? And with what? Our newspaper wanted to know that from the members of the Landtag and Bundestag.

Do MPs earn anything on top of their diets?

And if so, how much?

And with what?

Our newspaper wanted to know that from the members of the Landtag and Bundestag.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

- The mask affair has revealed that some politicians have done unfair deals with the crisis.

That directs the focus on the part-time jobs.

We asked the members of the Bundestag and Landtag from the constituency what income they earn beyond their diets.

Their written answers are summarized on this page.

What part-time jobs do you have?

I'm Of Counsel with a law firm.

I am not active in any mandate, but advise in particular on European law issues and their national application.

Conflicts of interest do not arise.

I was already working in the law firm before my mandate in the Bundestag and would like to keep in touch so that I can still have a professional foothold even after leaving politics.

There are also various offices and commitments, most of which are voluntary.

I receive remuneration for two positions to which I have been appointed or appointed.

I was appointed by the BaFin (which also sets the remuneration) to act as a shop steward at Bayerische Landesbausparkasse, and I was appointed by the CSU regional group as a member of the advisory board for basic savings bank policy issues at the Bavarian Savings Banks Association.

As a member of the district council, I also receive meeting lump sums.

What income do you get from secondary employment?

In my work as Of Counsel at Waigel Attorneys at Law, I receive 1,500 euros per month plus sales tax.

As a shop steward at Bayerische Landesbausparkasse, I received EUR 4,023.30 including 19 percent sales tax for the first half of 2020 and EUR 3,921.86 including sales tax for the second half of the year.

This corresponds to a total of 7945.16 euros including sales tax per year.

As a member of the Advisory Board for fundamental questions about savings bank policy at the Bavarian Savings Banks Association, I receive EUR 2,500 a year, plus an attendance fee of EUR 400 per participation.

The amount is capped at 3700 euros per year, so more than three sessions will not be compensated.

The sales tax is paid directly by the Savings Banks Association.

In 2020, the income including travel expenses amounted to 3,336 euros.

As a district councilor, I receive an expense allowance of 100 euros for each participation in a parliamentary group meeting or a meeting of the district council.

Did you do business with the pandemic?

No.

What is your attitude towards transparency rules?

I support the strict consequences that the CSU and CDU are drawing from the mask affair.

We now need a real transparency offensive to strengthen confidence in politics.

The impression must not be created that parts of politics are using their mandate for personal gain.

I am happy to do my part for clarification and transparency.

What part-time jobs do you have?

I don't have any part-time jobs.

What income do you get from secondary employment?

I do not receive any income from outside employment.

Did you do business with the pandemic?

No.

Instead, at the beginning of the pandemic in March of last year, I donated 1000 euros to the Corona emergency aid fund of the German Red Cross.

MPs have no business to do with the pandemic.

You have to ensure a sensible crisis management in order to protect health, life, education and economy equally and to organize help and support for those whose professional existence is endangered because of illness or because of necessary restrictions.

What is your attitude towards transparency rules?

I am in favor of a ban on paid outside employment for all Members of Parliament.

Nobody needs to tell me that members of the Bundestag still have time for sideline jobs.

There is not enough time to deal with all the issues that a member of parliament should decide on.

Anyone who has paid secondary employment does so at the expense of the parliamentary activity for which one was elected.

In addition, I am in favor of MPs having to publish all additional income that is to be taken into account for tax purposes, starting with the first cent.

What part-time jobs do you have?

I am a district councilor (parliamentary group spokesman for the CSU) and a member of the administrative board of Sparkasse Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen.

What income do you get from secondary employment?

As the spokesman for the CSU parliamentary group, I receive 180 euros a month.

The attendance fee per meeting in the district council is 70 euros.

I receive an expense allowance of EUR 585.61 for each meeting of the Sparkasse's Board of Directors.

Did you do business with the pandemic?

No, and neither would I.

Such behavior is incompatible with my understanding of open, honest politics that are committed to the interests of the citizens.

What is your attitude towards transparency rules?

Anyone exercising a political mandate at the state or federal level should primarily focus on it and not create the impression that working in parliament is nothing more than a part-time job.

In principle, the following applies to me: Anyone who has additional income that goes beyond the MP's diet should voluntarily disclose all earnings.

This is the only way to achieve transparency, which is particularly important in this very sensitive area, and regain lost trust in the population.

What part-time jobs do you have?

I still manage our farm with my wife.

The income is reported annually to the President of the State Parliament in due form and in due time.

As a municipality and district council, I receive expense allowances of 20 to 70 euros per meeting.

What income do you get from secondary employment?

No.

Did you do business with the pandemic?

At no point did I use the mandate to gain personal gain.

What is your attitude towards transparency rules?

The green parliamentary group has always agreed to create the highest possible level of transparency.

Every member is required to provide appropriate information on their own websites, including me on my own homepage.

The parliamentary group demands, among other things, a lobby register that records all stakeholders before they are given access to the parliament and ministries.

What part-time jobs do you have?

In addition to my work as a member of the state parliament of the Free Voters, I am admitted to the bar.

However, since I moved into the state parliament, I have not accepted any more mandates.

The work in the Maximilianeum occupies me completely.

What income do you get from secondary employment?

I earn a few hundred euros annually from books that I previously wrote for the Walhalla publishing house.

But I also stopped writing as a member of the state parliament.

Did you do business with the pandemic?

No, I did not do business with the pandemic.

What is your attitude towards transparency rules?

In principle, the state parliament adopted a strict set of rules after the relatives affair in 2013.

But there are points where you definitely have to re-sharpen now.

For example, when doing business with the state.

That is incompatible with the activity as a mandate holder.
