60 countries around the world, including the poorest, are expecting delays in the arrival of the vaccines against Corona intended for them following the suspension of shipments at least until the beginning of June.

COVAX, the global initiative to deliver vaccines to poor countries and without access to vaccines, has delivered more than 25,000 doses to these countries in the past week.

Less than two million vaccines have been delivered under the program to date to 92 developing countries.

World Health Organization Chairman Tedros Adhanum Gavharisus yesterday (Friday) criticized the "shocking imbalance" in the immune distribution to developing countries. He said in rich countries one in four people get vaccinated, while poorer countries only one person in 500 is vaccinated on average.

The shortage of vaccines is mainly due to India's decision to stop exporting the vaccines from the Serum Institute plant, which produces the vast majority of Astrazenka's rations on which the plan relied to supply about a third of the global population in the fight against the corona virus.

The regular supply of vaccines in these countries is dwindling, as is the case in some of the first countries to receive COVAX shipments, and the additional delivery of second doses in the 12-week time window is questionable.

In vaccination tents set up at Kenyata National Hospital in Nairobi, many of those who came to their first doses were not sure they would receive a second dose "My fear is that if I do not get the second dose, my immune system will be weak, so I may die," said Oscar Odinga, a civil servant. .

Internal World Health Organization documents obtained by the IP show the uncertainty about shipments that "causes some countries to lose confidence in COVAX" This leads to the fact that those countries are considering support for vaccinations from China and Russia, which have not been approved by European or national authorities United States.

Earlier this month, the World Health Organization urged rich countries to urgently distribute ten million doses to meet the UN target of starting a vaccine against corona in every country within the first hundred days of the year. So far, countries have pledged hundreds of millions of dollars for the program. Delays in their transfer to poor countries

Donations of vaccines between countries are usually made for political reasons that do not take into account the morbidity data in that country.According to data from the organization that monitors vaccine shipments, so far 19 countries have agreed to share vaccines with other countries.

"In the absence of high immunization coverage around the world, we risk dragging the epidemic for additional years," said Livnia and Sudban, a professor at Duke University's World Health Institute.

"Every day that the virus is found to continue to exist is an opportunity for it to change to a more lethal version."

According to the International Rescue Committee, corona and deaths last month soared in many countries affected by the crisis: 322% in Kenya, 379% in Yemen and 529% in north-eastern Syria.

"The World Health Organization has promised beyond its capabilities and has not supplied the goods," said sturdy expert Prof. Brock Baker of Northeastern University.

"Why should we believe that they will now be able to increase production and ensure vaccinations in the coming months?"
