Daimler has already presented many new automobiles, but hardly any of this importance: the electric S-Class Mercedes EQS is becoming the benchmark for the turning point in the group.
Stuttgart - On April 15, Daimler is facing an extraordinary vehicle premiere: an electric counterpart to the Mercedes S-Class will usher in a new era at the Swabian car company - the futuristic-looking electric sedan bears the name EQS.
The flowing luxury class model is at the same time a technology carrier and a symbol of the innovative ability of the premium brand.
So far, Daimler has hardly appeared as an e-car pioneer with Mercedes, but that is about to change, as with arch-rival BMW:
Group boss Ola Källenius has eloquently heralded the race to catch up: Daimler is striving for nothing less than "the leading position" in electric drives and vehicle software, "the Swede announced in the autumn.
Given the technological lead of the competition, is that realistic?
Not only in the USA (Tesla *) and China (Nio, Baidu), but also in Europe, the electric car competition is now great.
Mercedes EQS: Daimler no longer only measures itself against conventional car manufacturers
In the age of electromobility, established manufacturers such as Mercedes must continue to compete with long-term competitors such as BMW *, VW * and Co., but also arm themselves against digital corporations such as Google, Apple * and Alibaba.
The corporations from the USA and Asia are moving more and more into the field of automobile manufacturers, says Stefan Bratzel, director of the Institute's Center of Automotive Management.
It is about "a battle of the worlds" between established car manufacturers and modern technology groups.
In the case of e-cars, the importance of software competence is now even more important than pure automotive experience.
No wonder that Daimler is also investing large sums of money in order to be able to build a competitive electronic software kit for its electric models.
Technologically, the EQS is based on a new, purely electric car architecture called EVA, which will soon also be installed in other electric models.
In addition, a second e-vehicle platform called MMA is being planned, which should be available from 2025.
Mercedes: EQS electric sedan with an impressive range - almost 800 km
The Mercedes EQS 2021 is the "most important new Mercedes presentation of the last ten years", judges car expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer *.
The new flagship is visually striking with frameless doors, a windscreen that seamlessly merges into the bonnet and a 1.41 meter wide display in the cockpit.
Truly impressive: Daimler guarantees customers of the new Mercedes product an electric range of up to 770 kilometers using the new WLTP process.
"If the EQS roughly adheres to the promised WLTP standard even under everyday stress, Mercedes would actually beat the Model S from Tesla *, which was the e-pioneer's best seller for several years in a row," says mobility researcher Ellen Enkel.
The fact that the EQS, like the conventional combustion S-Class as a luxury sedan, is not a model for the average citizen, is of secondary importance for the time being.
The company has not yet provided any information on the vehicle price.
"At Mercedes, the S-Class always served as a pioneer for new technologies, which were then inherited over time in the lower vehicle classes," says Enkel, underlining the importance as a technology carrier.
Will this also work in the electric age?
Investors' hopes can already be felt on the stock exchange.
The scandal surrounding allegedly manipulated diesel vehicles and a lack of innovative strength in the eyes of experts for many years have caused the share price * to plummet in the meantime, but things have been going up significantly since autumn, further boosted by the planned spinoff of the truck division.
E-car sales are also increasing, albeit at a very low level.
In the first quarter, 2.8 percent of all Mercedes cars sold worldwide were purely electric cars.
