"

Iswap (Islamic State in West Africa) fighters are still in Damasak, walking through the streets, firing shots and setting fire to humanitarian installations,

" a humanitarian said under cover of anonymity.

The arson attack on an NGO building spread to the destroyed UN base, one of her colleagues said.

The premises of three other NGOs were destroyed, added this source.

A military source confirmed the attack on Damasak but assured that the jihadists had not taken the city and had instead been driven back.

Northeastern Nigeria has been in the throes of deadly conflict since 2009 and the outbreak of attacks by Islamist Boko Haram.

In 2016, the group split, with the historical faction on one side and the ISWAP recognized by IS on the other.

Three years ago, on March 1, 2018, Iswap fighters attacked a UN base in Rann, a town in northeastern Nigeria, killing three aid workers and kidnapping another.

And on March 1, Iswap jihadists targeted the town of Dikwa, killing six civilians and forcing aid workers to withdraw.
