Prince Philip of Edinburgh: almost a century of life in pictures

From his first appearances alongside the young Princess Elizabeth to his release from a London hospital last month, the most prominent photographers documented Philip's life for more than 70 years. His body will be buried with all honors, but will not be presented to the public due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


The royal family said Friday that Prince Philip died quietly this morning at Windsor Castle.

He was 99 years old.

Like his future wife, the prince was born royalty and was the great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

She spent most of her life in the spotlight

after

becoming

related to an even more prominent royal family.

Philip was forced to abandon his naval career when his wife became Queen Elizabeth II.

Instead, he dedicated himself to supporting her.

He traveled the world with her and took over the management of the royal estates.

But he also found his own causes to support, including creating a program of non-competitive activities to encourage young people to recognize their abilities.

The prince painted, collected modern art, and became interested in industrial design.

But, he once said, "the world of the arts considers me an uneducated polo player."

He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, married the future queen in 1947 and kept his schedule full of public engagements until he retired in 2017.

On March 16, he was released from the hospital looking fatigued and haggard, after receiving treatment for an undisclosed infection and a heart problem.

Known for his ingenuity, he completed more than 20,000 royal engagements to further British interests at home and abroad.

He also

headed hundreds of charitable organizations

, created programs that helped British students and helped raise his four children, including his first-born, Prince Charles, heir to the throne.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Philip "has won the affection of generations here in the UK, in the Commonwealth of Nations and around the world."

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, expressed his condolences to the Queen "on behalf of the people of the United States."

"His legacy will endure not only through his family, but also in all the charitable endeavors that he formed," he said.

The UK government said the flags will be at half mast on official buildings until after Philip's funeral.

 said they were "deeply saddened" to learn of the prince's death.

Robert Lacey, royal biographer and adviser to the series, told the BBC that Philip was the "secret ingredient" to the queen's success.

The prince will be buried with all the honors due to a prince of the United Kingdom and the consort of Queen Elizabeth II.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will be a more discreet farewell than that of other members of the royal family.

The body of the prince will not be presented to the public due to the pandemic and his "uncomplicated" attitude.

Nor will it be a state funeral, to fulfill your last wishes.

Buckingham Palace will announce later when the funeral will be and how many people will attend.

Funerals are currently restricted to 30 people or less under the rules for the coronavirus in England, so it

is likely only for the immediate royal family.
