The UAE today (Saturday) unveiled a new phase in its space program and announced that two residents of the kingdom are expected to undergo astronaut training and possibly in the future be sent on space missions.

Among the two candidates selected is Nora al-Metroishi, born in 1993 and a senior engineer at the National Petroleum Company of the Principality of Abu Dhabi.

Along with al-Metroishi, Muhammad al-Mullah, a police helicopter pilot from Abu Dhabi and a child born in 1998, was also elected.

The two young men were selected from a pool of 4,000 volunteers from among the young people of the UAE, and passed the fitness and personality tests of the local space program.

The two are expected to train at NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston Texas, and may in the near future be sent to the International Space Station.

If al-Metroishi does fulfill her ambition and fly into space, she will be the first Arab woman in space, but not a Muslim.

This title is reserved for Anusha Raisian, an Iranian-American millionaire who paid for a space trip.

The United Arab Emirates recorded some significant achievements for its space contents last year, with the spacecraft sent by Amal reaching orbit around Mars. The country hopes to land an unmanned spacecraft on the moon and its stated goal is to establish a human colony on Mars in 2117.
