British Prince Andrew said today (Sunday) that the death of his father Prince Philip left "a huge void" for Queen Elizabeth, who had been married to him for 73 years, calling him "Grandfather of the Nation".

Andrew, the second son of Philip and Elizabeth, described his father who died on Friday at the age of 99 as an "extraordinary man", following a private ceremony held by the mourning royal family at Windsor Palace.

"It's a huge loss," Andrew said.

"I think you could say we lost the grandfather of the nation."

The prince said the family was reunited around the 94-year-old queen, adding that she was behaving with restraint in the face of the loss which she said "left a huge void in her life".

Andrew has rarely appeared in public since retiring from public office in 2019 due to his ties to Jeffrey Epstein, who ended his life that year while on trial for sexual offenses against minors.

Simultaneously with the prayer service in memory of Philip at the Church of the Saints in Windsor, similar events were held throughout the kingdom which is in the week of mourning.

The leader of the Anglican Church, the Archbishop of Canterbury, prayed for those whose name the Duke of Edinburgh, as Philip was officially called, left a "very large gap" in their lives.

As part of the official mourning days announced yesterday, people gathered outside Windsor Castle and other palaces of the British Royal Family and left flowers.

Among the notes attached to the bouquets outside Windsor was one attached to a navy hat, a tribute to Philip's service in the Navy.

"May God bless you sir, you were an example to us all," the note read.

In addition, political and religious leaders expressed support for Elizabeth, the oldest and oldest monarch in the world, and in the Premier League games the players observed a minute of silence in memory of Philip, whose portrait appeared on billboards on the British Isles.

Philip, a Greek prince, married Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she ascended the throne at the age of 25. He was the one who informed her of the death of her father, George VI, while visiting Kenya.

He helped modernize the monarchy after World War II and was on the side of his queen wife throughout a series of crises she went through during her long reign.

Philip's funeral will take place next week in a limited program, both because of the corona's limitations and because of the prince's desire for a private ceremony rather than a state event.

It will be held entirely at Windsor Castle, with the participation of only 30 people.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will not be one of them.

John Major, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1990 to 1997, said he hoped the Queen would have the time she needed to mourn her husband for the past 73 years.

He said the role of head of state is "a lonely class in many ways" and added that the queen would feel the lack of the person she had relied on for many decades.

"I know she's the queen, I know she has responsibility, but she earned the right to a period of mourning with her family," he told the BBC.

Major, who was the guardian of Princes William and Harry after the death of their mother Princess Diana, said he also hopes the funeral will be an opportunity to mend the rifts in the royal family, following an interview Harry and his wife Megan Merkel gave to Oprah Winfrey last month.

Harry will attend the funeral, while his wife, who is pregnant with their second son, will remain in California on the advice of a doctor.

"The rupture we were told about should be ended as soon as possible," Major said.
