Amman - SANA
An earthquake measuring 3.1 degrees on the Richter scale struck at dawn today south of Aqaba, Jordan.
The Jordanian Petra News Agency quoted the head of the Jordanian Seismological Center affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Ghassan Sweidan, as saying: The quake occurred at a depth of 40 kilometers south of Aqaba.
Various areas of Jordan, especially the southern regions, are witnessing seismic activity because they are located in the rubble pit on the Syrian-African fissure, the "Dead Sea Fracture", which made them vulnerable to earthquakes as a result of the movement of tectonic plates in the ground.
