The last snowflakes are gradually melting in the spring sun, temperatures are rising.

For many, now is the time to get the bike out of the basement.

But before the first tour can be undertaken, the bike should be checked for its ability to drive.

Tips from experts in the region show what needs to be taken into account.

Bad Toelz-Wolfratshausen

- "How much you have to do depends on the condition of the bike," says Waldemar Libotte, owner of the Libotte bicycle shop in Achmühle near Wolfratshausen.

Even if you haven't used the bike in winter, a check is necessary before using it for the first time.

For example, the chain should be cleaned of possible rust and salt residues.

Libotte also recommends oiling the chain a little so that it runs smoothly again.

“A drop of oil works wonders,” says the specialist dealer.

So that there is enough air in the bicycle tire when you want to pedal again, the tire pressure should be checked regularly and the tire inflated if necessary.

Libotte advises using a pump with an indicator.

In this way the “optimal pressure”, which can be read off the tire shoulder, can be achieved.

But even without such a pump, it is very easy to check whether there is still enough air in the tire, explains the specialist dealer.

“Squeeze the tire with your fingers.

If this gives way, there is not enough air in it. "

There is a lot more to consider when it comes to bicycle tires.

“The tires should be checked for side cracks,” adds Martin Schindler, owner of “Bikesport Schindler” in Greiling.

Porous areas could appear on the sides, even if the tread is still okay.

According to Schindler, it is very important to check the functionality of the brakes for a safe journey.

Care should be taken to ensure that there is still enough material in the brake pads.

Only then can the full braking force be deployed.

With disc brakes, it depends on the strength of the brake discs.

If these are too thin, they could break and, in an emergency, block the wheel, warns Schindler.

Anyone who is on the road with their bike should know that the bike must comply with the requirements of the road traffic regulations.

In addition to being fit to drive, it is also important that reflectors and the prescribed lighting are fitted, according to the bicycle dealer.

This not only avoids a fine, but also increases road safety.

According to Alo Pöckl, owner of “Radsport Oberland” in Lenggries, you can also do a thorough check of your own bike at home.

But if you want to be on the safe side, you should have a quick check carried out at a bicycle dealer.

"There the wheel is then inspected and, if necessary, repaired immediately," says Pöckl.

In the case of e-bikes, the electronic components and the battery are also checked.

A software update can also be carried out on this occasion.

The bicycle dealer recommends carrying out a check in good time.

“It's best to do it before you use the bike for the first time,” says Pöckl.
