In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, François Bayrou explains having consulted deputies, senators, European parliamentarians and mayors of the MoDem.

The political class is divided on the question of regional and departmental.

While several parties have expressed their health recommendations to maintain the poll in June, other voices are rising to ask for a postponement.

Among them, that of the Democratic Movement.

In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, François Bayrou explains having consulted deputies, senators, European parliamentarians and MoDem mayors.

From these exchanges, "

it emerges that the vast majority

" of those questioned "

are in favor of a postponement beyond the summer of 2021

".

They kept "

a very heavy memory of the municipal election of 2020

".

Organized on March 15, at the dawn of the first confinement, the first round had indeed given rise to contaminations, in particular among the assessors.

And more than a year later, despite the arrival of vaccines, the health situation remains worrying.

"Democratic conditions" called into question

The leader of the movement also evokes the opinion of the scientific council given to the government at the beginning of the month.

If the issue is not resolved, a postponement to the fall, accompanied by a number of strict recommendations, is however presented as less risky.

François Bayrou believes that the conditions "

cannot be met for the month of June

" and points to various issues, such as the vaccination of assessors and candidates, acclaimed by the scientific council.

"

Under these conditions, the health security of the organization of the poll cannot be guaranteed

", we can still read in this letter.

Before pointing the finger at "questioned

democratic conditions

".

According to François Bayrou, the scenario of maintenance would tilt in favor of outgoing presidents and prevent new candidates "

from making themselves known

".

The president of the MoDem also evokes "

the psychological conditions

" which could be the cause of a strong abstention.

According to the feedback from the field made by the mayors, the state of mind of the French in June will not be that of an election.

On the contrary, it will encourage “

our fellow citizens to seek a little relaxation, a change of scenery and the fresh air.

"

Finally, François Bayrou recalls "

the requirement

" expressed "

for years

" on a digitization of the vote, which would facilitate compliance with health rules.

And to conclude: "

The Democratic Movement (...) urges that we take advantage of the next six months to finally make possible in France a mode of expression of suffrage more in line with our time and the health precautions imposed by the epidemic we are going through.
