The bride of the Israel Prize, the director and film actress Michal Bat-Adam, protested this evening (Sunday) during the filming of the ceremony against the decision not to award the prize to Prof. Oded Goldreich.

While receiving the figurine, a human being approached the microphone and said that "I am very happy to receive the award. And I am very sad that we are four and four tonight, because one winner is missing here."

The ceremony will be broadcast at the end of Independence Day.

Earlier today, Prof. Goldreich received an alternative award at a ceremony at the Weizmann Institute, after being denied the Israel Award for his political views.

The award was presented to Goldreich by Prof. David Harel, a former Israel Prize winner.

In a speech on the spot, Goldreich attacked the refusal of Education Minister Yoav Galant to award him the prize in the field of mathematics and computer science, claiming that it was part of an ongoing process of incitement against the left in Israel.

"This affair has not been on me for a long time. It is bigger than me and affects us all," Goldreich clarified.

"The position of the Minister of Education is just another small step in an ongoing process of de-legitimization of the left in Israel. We are determined to fight this de-legitimization process, and I am glad that I fell for the opportunity to try and contribute directly to this struggle."

The High Court last week accepted the request of the Minister of Education to examine whether he could refuse to award the Israel Prize in Mathematics and Computer Science to Prof. Goldreich. A month from today.

Since the ceremony takes place this week, in practical terms the decision means that Goldreich will not receive the award in the near future.

About two weeks ago, Goldreich signed a petition of academics from Israel and around the world calling on the European Union not to allow research programs appointed by it to collaborate with Ariel University.

The High Court ruled that Goldreich was behind his signing of the petition, but that he had made it clear that he did not support the BDS movement. The High Court ruled.

The court further ruled that if Galant nevertheless decides to award the prize to Goldreich, he could do so on another occasion.

"We have noted before us that as long as it is decided to award Prof. Goldreich the prize, it will be possible to do so at the Israel Awards ceremony to be held next year or at an earlier date at Prof. Goldreich's choice," they wrote.

Sources close to Galant said that "this is a significant victory over the boycott movements - in the upcoming ceremony, the Israel Prize will not be awarded to those who undermine the State of Israel."
