"60% of the new price": a good deal on car scrapping for less expensive spare parts

2021-04-12T09:14:03.991Z

Very little used, the second-hand market nevertheless offers great savings. And everyone is a winner: the automobili

Doors, bumpers, tailgates of all colors arranged one behind the other, rows of shelves filled with headlights, mirrors ... Some 28,000 spare parts - especially bodywork - come out of Eco Casse every year , located in Gerstheim (Bas-Rhin), on the banks of the Rhine, about twenty kilometers from Strasbourg.

Here, we know well the subject of the exorbitant cost of new spare parts, of which the French manufacturers have a monopoly in France.

For a Peugeot 307 rear-view mirror at the manufacturer's price, it is thus necessary to count 263 euros (excluding tax) for the skeleton to which are added 38 euros for the hull, 60 euros for the mirror and another 65 euros for the electric motor, details a employees of Eco Casse.

Or more than 400 euros in total.

"And we sell it for 60 euros", proudly announces Francesco Moio, his boss.

What to consider sacred savings.

Automotive: for spare parts, also think about the occasion

Since 2017, the law obliges repairers to offer the choice of opting for new or used spare parts.

"We try to offer as many reusable parts as possible, but sometimes people don't want them," explains Marcel Knorr, a retired bodybuilder who came to get a part for his son who took over the family business in the town. neighbor of Ernstein.

“There is a psychological effect,” says Francesco Moio.

People pay their premiums dearly and want something new when the loss is covered by their insurance.

Cheaper insurance premiums

Insurers in fact have every interest in pushing for the use of these cheaper second-hand parts.

"Market practice establishes an average level of final invoicing for this type of part at around 60% of the price of new", explains Cédric Videau, insurance manager at MAIF.

However, according to its data, the use of at least one re-used part was only carried out in 8.2% of repairs processed in 2020. To encourage repairers to prefer second-hand parts, insurers are dangling nice margins.

For the 307 rearview mirror displayed at more than 400 euros at Peugeot and bought used 60 euros at Eco Casse, the bodybuilder can charge it at 60% new, or about 240 euros.

"Some insurers even grant a small bonus on labor," specifies Francesco Moio.

In the end, the user wins.

Because the control of repair costs is reflected in insurance contributions.

In a few years, this boss of automobile scrapping has also seen mentalities evolve.

From twenty employees five years ago, his company has grown to 38 employees, a sign that demand is strong.

“We must still promote the re-use part, adds the boss of Eco Casse.

Using a part that has already been produced, that has had a first life and that is on the market is better.

And Francesco Moio to be skeptical about a possible end of the monopoly of French manufacturers on visible spare parts.

“Anyway, reproducing another piece on the other side of the world and bringing it to France is economic and ecological nonsense.
