At the worst moment of the coronavirus pandemic and in the midst of a political crisis that last year led to three presidents in a week,
Peruvians
voted to elect a new president in the most fragmented elections in their history.
Voting centers closed in Peru at 9:00 p.m. (Argentine time) and the counting of the votes of the contested presidential and legislative elections immediately began.
According to the electoral flash of
Ipsos Peru
for América Televisión, Pedro Castillo, Peru Libre's candidate for the Presidency, would occupy the first place of the vote with 16.8% of the valid votes.
Five other candidates would fight vote by vote upon arrival at the ballot.
Of the 18 candidates in contention, it was clear that none would be victorious in this first round.
The successor of President Francisco Sagasti will be decided in the June 6 ballot.
However, the first results would be released only at midnight in Argentina, according to what was reported by the
AFP
agency
.
The election was held under a deep
political crisis
and amid the
disenchantment of the population
with the discredited
political elite
.
All former Peruvian presidents who ruled since 1985 are peppered
with corruption cases
, some imprisoned or arrested.
One, Alan García, committed suicide before being captured by the police and two others, despite being prosecuted, are running for president and parliament.
In twelve years,
57 former governors and 2,002 former mayors
were prosecuted or are at large.
More than 86,000 polling stations were open for 12 hours to avoid crowds and infections by the virus that killed 384 people on Saturday, the highest daily figure since the pandemic began, with
collapsed hospitals and the increase in deaths of infected in home
.
In addition to being president, Peruvians elected
130 legislators
and five Peruvian parliamentarians to the Andean Parliament.
